To counter this threat I am recomending that we on RSI adopt and "Overkill" stratergy and in that we use 140 A-10's.... This should even the side out a bit.

It doesn't matter how he plays, it matters the damage he does. And as you've seen, he's done a lot of damage. He had 37 kills in the first round of the last battle. Substantially more than the person in 2nd. ;)

I'm sure this guy was in RSI when I first joined the tournament......Who knows, maybe he is still lurking somewhere?
One for the Pilots maybe good addition to CFMod ;) VFTCAS (VF Terrain Collision Avoidance System)
Then again, it takes the risk factor out of flying in. :)
You obviously misunderstood the purpose of this addon: it affect AI only, as it makes sure they don't nose crash into vegetation by checking X meters in front of the vehicle for terrain changes, and adding a minimum of 35m to that...
The vids are using the debug system, so when you get it you won;t be seeing the dump in the sidechat, neither the little HUD element that targets flags the location where the maths is beeing done over....
SO i see not relation between this and CF human pilots...
Title: Re: Movies Thread
Post by: Pufu on October 31, 2009, 08:48:49 AM
Simpler to just use the flyinheight 35 in the units init then ;)
Not really, since the flightinHeight 35 will use getPosATL (http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/getPosATL) to verify the distance to terrain right under the air vehicle, so if there is a high depression, or a mountain with trees in front of the chopper, that will surely hit it :)

Just so that people dont get all excited. We are not planning to use ACE2 in CF. The reason is that ACE is script heavy and in our experience performs badly with a large number of people. Other places have used it, but they are much smaller in scale. However, having said that, it is certainly something that we could use for the COOPs as its more suitable for this.
Pufu might be able to give us more information as to whether the large scale multiplayer capability of ACE2 is improved from ACE1.
BTW we had those Bradley in IC-ArmA. I even think Ike converted them for ArmA II.

Bradley yes, but not quite the same ones. ACE1 Bradley could turn turret without turning engine on.

As a Bradley Crewman in real life, with experience on them from OIF II as a cavalry scout, I can confirm you can in real life turn Bradley turret with engine off on just battery power. Even if you lost power, still possible to turn and fire the Bradley on manual hand crank power as well. Much slower, but still possible. On another not however, your not suppose to move at more than 10mph with the launcher System up and ready to fire. Also in order to reload the launcher you should have to have personnel in the back as the rear deck needs to open, launcer down... tubes out... new missiles in... deck down.
Even though having this in CFArma would be amazing, I was actually referring to them to actually releasing it, because it's been too long! But since we're on the topic, will the wound module be implemented into CFArma? That's something I'd really like to see, specially since I'm currently a medic.
If not... can we at least have the same soundpack as the ACE2 videos? Those in-game sounds are amazingly good, I don't know if they're VopSound though.

@Mick ACE2 has the wounding and stamina system redone (those were the most script heavy parts of ACE1). SO all in all, most scripts have been redesigned, the performance should be better. BUT I cannot guarantee how ACE2 will perform under CFA2 environment, so i won't make any comments now. All i can say is that 2 well known communities are beta-testing A2 as we speak, both are running 50-80 players missions (both coop and tvt).
@Momo: ACE2 will be released when it is done...You and others would be the first to whine about if some features would be incomplete or left out. regarding sounds, those are customly done by ACE dev (tpm), not vopsound.
Wounding Module...Still has a few bugs left in the scripts, especially if you force it to work on respawn missions.

I have been losing guys at the start of battle since the armour was added. This is due to a lack of care and attention bt RS M1 driver. I lost two guys flattened at battle start by said Tank. This week was however an improvment as only a fuel truck was dented. All my guys managed to avoid death this week due to improved Tank avoidance training as shown in the following video.

Never discuss Religion or Politics comes to mind ;)
Just stumbled on this one a 10km Map may be suitable for CFArmA Campaigns Razani Waziristan a region of Afganistan. It's an ArmA addon converts to ArmA2 with the CAA1 (the ArmA conversion for Islands to ArmA2, Avgani and Afgan Village).
Same size as Ghernagorsk but open desert and mountains with just a few Taliban Training compounds dotted around. Very few roads so Armour would be an ideal for Armour based Campaign.

You know, I am not saying I enjoy seeing any one hurt or that I find chaos or carnage appealing but Liveleak have gone total *cat* recently.
I remember when it first started getting videos from Iraq and Afghanistan and that shit was the most out of this world, brutal shit I have ever seen in my life. I saw US and UK marines hold their own against vast Taliban forces, and you could see the complete fear in their eyes as they knew there was a very good chance they might not make it out alive... and you could tell by the way they were fighting as well.
I saw one where a marine outpost had been attack by machine gun fire and an RPG smacked right into the side blowing a guys leg clean off. They pulled back inside and unfortunately the guy bled out on camera (it was very sad to see and not pleasant at all), but it seemed to just make his friends even angrier and they all kind of went a bit mental. I didn't see the outcome of the fight but it was brutal to say the least.
I have seen footage from the other side as well, which I think from a western perspective is a gift for us. If you want to understand the enemy, watch footage from their perspective and you can see and learn how they operative straight from their own eyes. It can sometimes be unpleasant especially when they won a battle (which they milk over and over again in later footage by repeating some cut and edited pieces) as you can imagine they don't tend to take very many prisoners.
But over all Liveleak would give you a tapestry to look at, something that really helped you understand the nature and the effect of war in general and particularly these wars. But I have noticed that in the last 3 years almost anything controversial has been removed and the only combat videos remaining amount to nothing more than gun ho propaganda.
One thing emerged from it though which I very odd. When I saw the horrible videos of marines losing I wanted to join up there and then, I actually felt a fury that I had never experienced before. When I see this gun ho propaganda bullshit I could care less about the war, military or joining up.
Does anyone know of something similar to Liveleak, or at least something similar to the way it used to be?

Yeah I know what you mean about Liveleak but its not their fualt, its governments clamping down and militery government leaders claiming rights to such videos and censoring But yeah I saw a clip somewhere of such footage but forgot what site it was, I'll try find it again. It was where in iraq they crippled a US helli and it crash landed, pilot died instantly and they are dragging his body about, while the co-pilot survived but very dazed and pleeding for help, but they executed him.

And Cornish, I almost did the same thing (challenger one)... allthough it was only a howitzer on 25t or something. But I drove it without snow "shoes".. and was gonna park it on front of the garage, on icy asphalt..... man, did my heart ever jump a few meters as I came in and made the turn... the darn thing didnt turn, it just slided towards a off road vehilce parked close... and once those only 25t started sliding.. nothing to do but wait for it to stop. Which it did.. approx 50cm from the parked vehicle...
Never did that again, can promise you that.. lol

Found this and thought it was both fasinating & bloody scary at the same time.....these things are driven around Russia in the middle of nowhere and as u can see only take a few minutes to launch.

Jeez Monkman see what you mean :) Especially the reassuring clunk of the Nose Cone Cap, as it falls on the deck prior to launch :) Is that part if the design :) Sound like the old style trash cans, or bins as we Brits referr to them. When the Binman droppd the lid. I saw a Sea Launch missile on YouTube where one of the crewmen on deck nearly gets toasted by the flames as the missile leaves the deck. Scary stuff thease intercontinental Roman Candles. :)

US Army Tests Javalin Anti-Tank Missile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbcZCD05fO0#normal)
Here is something that should get any tanker worried....be it a T72/80 (shown in video) or any modern western MBT. The awsome power of this 'fire & forget' missle is outstanding.
For those who don't know, the Javelin has (That I know of) two modes of attack.. Direct line of sight & Topdown Attack. I can possibly see that a modern MBT with re-active armor or maybe the "shortora" system on a T90 may defeat a "Direct Attack" mode, but no tank in the world has enough armor plate ontop of the turret (Not even an Israeli Merkeva) to withstand the shot.
Sobering thoughts for any tanker eh? When you see this video and then play the game, you can understand why some people think the ingame Javelin is "a little weak".

Nice video. Pity you didn't show the only eye-to-eye contact with the T90 in that battle. I was about to fire at you but the next second my turret went behind a small trench so I couldn't take you down, then when I popped above the crest you were moving down the other side of the hill. ;D Then there was the only other contact, where I destroyed you in the trees. Was a big picnic party in that treeline, lol.
Gotta give respect for the photo-shoot though ::)

LoL no way were we going to go "eye to eye" with your T90.....Nope, like last week.....it was time tacticaly retreat, but i've seen other video of you getting hit by a AT4 and then the M1 schwaking you.
To be honest that encounter was the only time me & Royjones ever saw the T90, but we did blow up at one point, so I guess that was you! ;D

All that Ruskie Hardware looks really impressive! Untill you remember what happend to it in it's dealings in Afganistan. Saw lots of MI8s and MI24s dropping from the skies after Stinger hits. Those pesky Americans gave the Muja Hadin. The most deadly weapon to my mind is a determind footsoldier with the right weapon in the right place at the right time. Main problems for Russians in Afghanistan were mountains. Tanks and BMPs couldnt elevate high enough to hit ridges where RPS were comming from. And all those canyons denied Mi24 to fly lower and evade Stingers. They wasnt prepared for that kind of warfare. :)

DCS: Black Shark is an amazing game. It also shows how flawed the KA-50 is. One time when I was doing my normal startup procedure, and I was ready for takeoff. When I upped the throttle, my chopper started shaking horrible. Two seconds later it completely exploded! After watching the replay I noticed I had forgotten to disengage the rotor brake (I think it was atleast, It's a long time ago since I played). Sure, the chopper might brake if that happens, BUT IT SHOULDN'T EXPLODE!

Below is a trailer for the danish documentary Armadillo that follows danish soldiers in Helmand. The director and film-team was embedded with the soldiers with NATO approval.
One especially controversial scene is one where they "finish off" insurgents that have been hit by a grenade in a ditch, followed by laughter and boasting.
This looks pretty good. I ll have to look for a download. Nice find.
It had premiere in Cannes 16th of may, and will be in cinemas in denmark by 8th of july. I think finding downloads before that time will be pretty hard.. :\

very interesting, sweeper. it just happened that today i visited an (controversial) exhibition (http://www.mak.at/e/jetzt/f_jetzt.html) on north korean art in vienna. of course, the main background of the water color and oil paintings is propaganda, it is very reminiscent of nazi/communist art/propaganda.
strangely, the BBC documentary somehow felt over the top and constructed a bit, it just couldn't make it's point for me. i mean Sue Lloyd-Roberts constantly tried to find something bad about this country, but most of the things were not that bad?! some of the remarks even sounded silly like the comments about north korea being a manifestation of an orwellian future - lol, that coming from UK (or US) people is quite ironic. and how many other countries have starvation, under-developed economy/industry/technology? At least the majority of these people is made to believe they live in a great country, and that's what really makes it great for them (or maybe at least more endurable?)... also the thing about Kim Il Sung (deceased leader), i am sure the people there don't think he is physically alive, he is "alive" in the sense that his actions and thoughts carry on to influence the population. how many western people think there is a god?...
on the other side, i don't know what the real situation is there, the documentary seemed fake & hypocritical though.
edit: watching the second film proves a better point.

Yeah. Human rights should not be promoted anywhere as long as the people is led to believe that they live a good life! Let's use that recipe in Gaza and Darfur too. Spew them full of propaganda and disallow any contact with the world around. That will give all those malnourished, tortured and killed some joy!
For the N. Koreans I'm sure the famine of 97 was a real party: "In 2006, Amnesty International reported that a national nutrition survey conducted by the North Korean government, the World Food Programme, and UNICEF found that 7% of children were severely malnourished; 37% were chronically malnourished; 23.4% were underweight; and one in three mothers was malnourished and anaemic as the result of the lingering effect of the famine. The inflation caused by some of the 2002 economic reforms, including the Songun or "Military-first" policy, was cited for creating the increased price of basic foods.
In the 1990s North Korea faced significant economic disruptions, including a series of natural disasters, economic mismanagement and serious resource shortages after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. These resulted in a shortfall of staple grain output of more than 1 million tons from what the country needs to meet internationally accepted minimum dietary requirements.[109] The North Korean famine known as "Arduous March" resulted in the deaths of between 300,000 and 800,000 North Koreans per year during the three year famine, peaking in 1997, with 2.0 million total being "the highest possible estimate."[110] The deaths were most likely caused by famine-related illnesses such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and diarrhea rather than starvation.[110]
But lets not jugde as long as they have propaganda that tells them that life is great.
I'm sure that the people of N. Korea are always allowed so say what they think. That's surely the reason every visitor to the country has someone following them all the time. Regarding the UK, US etc: you're at least allowed to voice you opinion and live a pretty free life.
If you don't see something wrong with a country that has a leader that gorges in fine cognac, opens his own italian restaurant (with authentic italian durum wheat imported, and chefs teached in italy) while his country starves... well, I don't know.
don't watch it right before bedtime at least. Pretty bad stuff in it.

Carl Burgess | Ratatat - Drugs (http://www.blinkart.co.uk/#project/ratatat-drugs)
Quote from: Carl Burgess
I have always been fascinated by stock imagery and stock footage collections, Hours and hours of footage which for the most part created with no pre defined use in mind, sitting in storage waiting to be picked up and dropped into a budget documentary.
Searching for 'Stressed Businessman' or 'Old Man Smiling' on Getty Images throws up 100s of great results. There is a surreal quality to these staged clips, and more often than not a really strange dark humor about them. Unconvincing acting, forced emotions, cheap lighting are just some of the things that make these clips unique, and these are the qualities I wanted to embrace.
